Why 4/20?

If you’re just arriving to the party, or an old pro who’s never heard the story of how 4/20 (or more accurately, 4:20) came to be, then sit down and buckle up. Learning about the history of this day is ask close to a stoner rite of passage as anything else is (well, that and maybe eating a little too much edible—it happens to all of us eventually). Once upon a time in pre-legalization California…

420 became the calling code for cannabis back in the day when you had to be hush-hush when you spoke about THC flowers. There’s a rumor that it used to be the police code for marijuana related incidents at one point, but if you think about it, that doesn’t make too much sense, considering that for the most part, people used slang and code to fly under the polices’ radar.

There’s a far simpler story with humble beginnings that’ll tell you everything you need to know about the clandestine nature of canna-culture in the decades before it was legalized. It started with a group of highschool friends, a group of guys you might now know as the Waldos.

The story goes that somewhere about the 1970’s, a couple coast guards got nervous that their C.O. was going to discover their secret outdoor grow. Forced to abandon it to avoid being tied to the crime of cannabis cultivation (which was not even legal on a state level within California at the time), they decided to draw a map for the Waldos. At least someone could benefit from their deserted grow, right? Whether the alleged marijuana plot actually existed, or if the whole thing could be chocked up to a few coast guards messing with some high schoolers by sending them on a wild goose chase remains unknown, for the Waldos never found the spot marked on the map. But that didn’t stop them from looking.

They had standing plans to meet after school and go hunt for the green treasure that the map had promised, but since a few of them had football practice, they couldn’t gang up before a little after 4:00pm. There was a Louis Pasteur statue on campus that became their defacto meeting place, and thus the phrase ‘4:20 Louis’ was born.

Soon the phrase had become synonymous with cannabis for the group of kids, and they dropped the ‘Louis’ and started using 4:20 alone as code. If you knew, you knew, and that’s how cannabis culture was in a grand sense during the early hours of the ‘War on Drugs’. It was a tight knit community of people united by participating in a behavior that—if we’re being perfectly honest—shouldn’t have been illicit. But forced secrecy has a way of creating impressive networks, and soon ‘4:20’ was being used by cannabis enthusiasts all over the place to initiate conversations about their favorite flower without alerting anyone on the outside of their clandestine community as to what they were discussing.
